Continuing education through alternative learning pathways is a top priority on the political agendas to limit the interruption to education. While in the short term this might imply maintaining access to leaning through temporary distance learning programmes, in the long term it suggests to set up an educational infrastructure with contingency capacities able to manage arising future crisis and risks. Education systems are moving online on an unprecedented scale accompanied by trial-and-error learning and continuous adjustments. As the crisis is foremost, but not only a health crisis, the different systems and their key players have to be involved and their different perspectives considered in a complex decision-making process, which is accompanied by high degree of uncertainty. Communication with all stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, doctors, scientists and policy-makers are of the utmost importance in order to understand the concerns and address them appropriately.
